The Root Canal Procedure: What to Expect
Understanding what's involved with the procedure can help demystify the process and reduce anxiety:
- Numb the Tooth — We ensure the area is completely numb before beginning treatment.
- Remove the Infection — Using specialized rotary instruments, Dr. Fogel accesses and removes the infected pulp tissue.
- Clean and Seal Canals — The empty canals are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a biocompatible material to prevent future infection.
- Temporary Filling — Our dentist will place a temporary filling on the tooth to protect it until we place the final restoration.
Most patients experience immediate pain relief following treatment, but some mild soreness for a few days is normal. You can generally return to normal activities the same day, but avoid chewing on the treated tooth until we place the permanent restoration.
The Danger of Delaying Treatment
An infected tooth won't heal without intervention, and postponing treatment allows the infection to spread beyond the tooth to neighboring teeth, and even throughout your body. In severe cases, dental infections can lead to life-threatening conditions.
